Talks

Canberra, ACT
fACTion Speaker Series

2009 This talk was presented at the fACTion Speaker Series, a collaboration with the AIA. In a casual setting Stephen and Clare provided an insight into the process of the practice which combines relationships with clients and builders and a diverse range of influences from architectural theory, fiction and popular culture to mix in the studio environment of the Atelier.

QLD State Library
Food, Country & Design

2008 A talk presented at the State Library of Queensland Auditorium. Stephen addressed the series theme with reference to Ark's built and unbuilt work, augmented by plenty of cross-cultural analogies including the animated work of Christian Volckman, table top sukiyaki cooking, the written works of Gaston Bachelard, Ian McEwen, Roland Barthes, the art of Lucian Freud, the architecture of Peter Zumthor, and, strangely, the TV series Miami Vice...

QUT Art Museum
Mid-20th Century Australian Architecture

2007 Stephen and his notable colleague co-presenter Ingrid Richards presented an overview of Australian architecture from Federation until the mid-20th century, covering the works of Utzon, Seidler, Burley-Griffin, Taglietti and others with reference to great international contemporaries such as Schindler, Loos and Wright. In association with the QUT Art Museum's Exhibition “Breaking New Ground”.

QUT Art Museum
The Other Australian Architecture

2007 With a lead-in from Drysdale's “Maria”, Stephen discussed the firmly established tradition of non-urban architecture in Australia, with comparisons against international exemplars such as the desert works of Rick Joy and, perhaps surprisingly, Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House. In association with the QUT Art Museum's Exhibition “Beyond the Edge of Town: Landscapes in the Collection”.

QUT Art Museum
Making it Small

2006 A discussion centred on the evolution of Japanese architecture from the Ise Shrine to Toyo Ito's Tod's building, via the Katsura Imperial Villa and its mythologising by European Modernists as Japan's proto-modernist icon. In association with the QUT Art Museum's exhibition “Painting For Joy”.

QUT Art Museum
Everything You See Is Real

2006 Stephen indulges his unabashed enthusiasm for Japanese animation in this feature-length talk about the sheer brilliance of an artform often considered to be, well, a little nerdy. Excerpts from classic films such as Ghost in the Shell and series including Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo kept the audience amazed and amused while Stephen discussed the surprising conceptual depth and storyline complexity unique to the medium, gathered around the central idea that there are no actors, only characters in anime... Given in association with the QUT Art Musem's Exhibition “Painting For Joy”.
