Highgate Hill
320 SQM
Brisbane, Queensland
Unbuilt
A residence conceived for a steep and magnificent site that rises gently from the street then tumbles rapidly into the Brisbane River. The house is set well back from the street and is concealed from view by dense and very tall existing vegetation. Approaching via an entry gatehouse, one passes under the shade of a large Poinciana tree, past a set-piece arrangement of formal living spaces which open fully on all sides and are absorbed into the landscape and a private northern courtyard.
The entire ground level is treated as an extension of the external ground plane with minimal enclosure, while the private upstairs sleeping spaces are concealed behind a layer of rusted steel mesh which filters strong daylight into a dappled and ever-changing delight on the walls and floors of bedrooms and bathrooms.
